Importance of Beforehand Trained Qualified Engineers of different Branches

In our country a large no. of qualified engineers are being produced every year.
These, just graduated Engineers are not Engineering Professionals.Industry needs to employ Engineering Professionals, may be budding, but should be professionals.

Just graduated Engineers have to be trained by dedicated experienced engineering professionals such that they are able to transform themselves to Engineering Professionals.
During this process of transformation the Just graduated Engineers are exposed to the attitude, environment, working on different trades, HR dealing skills, communication skills, engineering  aptitude is enhanced, industries are looking for all these traits in the incoming Engineers.

Colleges are providing academics. Academics is just data-bank, like in a computer.Different Software’s are required to use the computer effectively.

Similarly, just fresh engineers need Beforehand training  with multi trades enabling them to work in Industries effectively with optimum productivity.

Industries look for such Beforehand Trained Engineers. These Engineers strengthen the sustainability of their Industry.

Training

For a long time our countrymen are agriculture based with the assistance of animals and natural rains.Generations after generations have been learning agricultural process from observations and lessons from their senior generations and interactions with their neighbors and known farmers.
This passing on the process of doing or performing a particular job with more accuracy is known as Training.
Major population of our country is in transition phase from agricultural base to Industrial base. Even agriculture industry is now shifting its base to mechanisation.
Mechanisation is a result of using scientific observations and framing, formation of rules and laws of natural happenings and occurrences  and then using these rules and laws of nature to overcome natural obstacles and hindrance being faced by human beings in performing jobs.
Mechanisation helps human being in reducing the use of muscle power/ human efforts in performing various jobs with the help of machines.
These machines, give best results if operated and maintained as per the prescribed methods by their designers and manufacturers, otherwise these machines prove to be white elephants. Before using the different machines, man has to learn many other traits, which enable the man to utilise the machines to optimum level.
This learning is known as Training.
In general it is observed that men are trainable if they possess basic education of the field.
Training is a type of recognition to the concerned trainee that s/he is capable of performing the job satisfactorily.therfore Training should be considered as essential for all for each and every profession including agriculture.
Before-hand Training helps in adapting the required Culture to perform the specific Job.

A Myth - Industry is ok without Engineers

This is about a common talk in Industrial Environment that these days Industry Ready Engineers are not available.I accept this fact, but I try to view this from a different angle also and want to share the same to a larger cross section of Industry on PAN India basis.

There are certain myths about Industry and Engineers.

Let us understand the different points which I term as myths one by one and put efforts to remove these myth and attack on many other issues.

1 Colleges are not producing Industry Ready Engineers.
Here, please ask yourself, did any Medical college produce any patient ready doctor even after internship during college studies; did any Education Professional college produce a Student Ready Teacher; Did any Law college produce a court ready advocate.

Answer to all these is Big No!
In all the above professions, the new graduate is put in to practice through training and  tried and treated rigorously by their seniors.
Similarly a new engineer has to be trained , tried and treated.

2 Engineers don't work only Mistry/technicians really work.
If an Engineer doesn't work, he is not a Engineer, he is a munshi or admin. supervisor.
But a trained and treated engineer available on the Shop floor, he can not avoid working. He will have to come on the scene ready to work with work force. In such case Mistry loves to work in his supervision , guidance and leadership.A trained engineer works to lead the team at different works or jobs.He does the precision works.

3 a Mistry or Technicians are more capable of working.
Apparently this is so. A Mistry is a Mistry and Engineer is an Engineer. While a Mistry knows only how, the Engineer is supposed to know why and how both!
Mistry are skilled in doing the task, but without regards to costs, quality and delivery commitment.

4 a Employing Engineers is a costly affair.
Again this is apparent only at first instance, The so called Jugads by experienced Mistry or Technician prove to be more costly in long run, spoils the branding and hence dents the Competitiveness and sustainability of the industry.Jugads have to be done as stop gap arrangements. I have experienced personally a number of times in my career. (सौ सुनार की एक लोहार की) 100 blows of a gold smith are equal to 1 blow of black smith.
I consider some time Jugad is unavoidable but is a step out of Box and can not be made a regular practice.

Employing a trained and Industry Ready Engineer is always economical and useful in branding and making the Industry sustainable.

5. Training Cost on Engineers go unproductive.
Yes, if engineer does not stay with the Industry for 2/3/4 years. Because Industry takes risk of training new Engineer. If he escapes the industry prematurely, industry gets upset.

Solution to all the above issues are:
College should focus on Academic enrichment of their students,
Students should be motivated to take Vocational Trades Training with Employability orientation from 3rd agency.
This will enhance Employability of fresh graduate engineers,
This will increase no of Qualified Engineers in industry in turn productivity of Industry.
This will dilute the risk from recruitment of raw Engineers.
Overall this will strengthen the sustainability of Industries.

Vocational Training and Core Skills

In early days we didn’t have so many professions open in the market.
While each profession was in practice, but not in commercial manner. In this era every Service is being commercialized.
One, who is capable of performing some kind of service, is able to survive." Survival of the fittest" is the open secret of today’s advance or modern society. Second ,who performs in competitive atmosphere, will only survive.
In one way, we are members of advanced society, slavery has been erased from the universe, but our society has become slave of commercial era.
In this era, one who possesses skill of even one single trade will survive without getting a severe punch of slavery, otherwise he will become burden on the modern society and only God will help him. But the fact is GOD never helps, God preaches to learn and act.

Here the Vocational Trade Training comes in the society to enable everyone to secure one or the other trade's Core skills.
Vocational Trade Training rescues the humankind from falling back in the trap of old timers slavery tradition.

Vocational Trade Training is becoming very popular, but it has to be effective in transformation of the trainees such that the trainee could render specific service in a professional manner.
In spite of numerous VTCs ( Vocational Trade Training Center) coming up around our country and globe as a whole, the clients are not getting the satisfaction they want from the services.
A detailed survey and analysis of the situation reveals that something, as important as salt in food, is missing from the Vocational Training.
I switched over myself from Engineering Management practitioner to a trainer and transformer such that the clients of the trainees feel the taste for which they hired the trainees. Each of my trainees is under my focus & observations. His behavior is observed so as to train and enable him to transform himself to a practicing professional.

In general it is observed that their common sense and desire to render service has been buried deep in the bottom layers of their conscience. They get mislead that only Vocational Trade Training will enable them to earn with and  get disappointed after getting training certification, when they don’t get some job.
They forget that they too possess common sense. This forgetfulness doesn’t allow them to be a Professionally Skilled Person.

This problem could be overcome if experienced & practicing professionals are encouraged and motivated to come forward and adapt trainer profession for tomorrow’s  happy world.

Vocational Trade Training and Employability Skills to Engineering Students

Vocational Trade Training to Engineering students ( Graduate/Diploma)is a part of Employability Skills set.
Vocational training is the pathway to the multi Occupation lanes leading to Successful Growth in Industrial Sector.
Before we discuss about Vocational Trade Training, let us try to understand the current era of science and technologies.

This era is devoted to create, develop , popularize new technologies in day to day life. Computers; Electronics & Communication; Automation; supported by new innovations every other day . Basic machines will remain basic. But they will be fitted with a number of interwoven accessories.

The society is full of several non engineering professions, some of them are listed as medical, domestic appliances, Law, journalism, political, teaching, farming, food , entertainment and lot many more. Each part of life is accessorized with sophisticated, accurate and complicated state of the art technologies. These professionals neither have knowledge and nor time to attend to them. But these non engineering professionals , students, old , handicapped and even non school going Children have become habitual to the level of addiction of using these technologies in day to day and  hour to hour life.

Vocational Training provides opportunities to begin practicing basic core profession based on hobby, education, needs of a person, society and nation and humanity as a whole.
Now we discuss the need of vocational trade training to engineering students of different trades. We have to first understand human psychology and the God gifted computer the brain of human being.

Human psychology, a normal human is fond of using, but afraid of disassemble and maintain or trouble shoot or repair the gadgets being used by him. For this purpose they need some one who is authorized and confident of performing on the job on a particular gadget or machine or equipment.
Vocational Trade Training institutes or schools train persons on one or more than one trades to a person.

Basic minimum qualification of the vocational trainee is as per the local governments rules and laws of the land.

During vocational training, the trainees are exposed to hands on experience with relevant tools, instruments etc on the specific engineering product they are taking training.
But in actual life their work is not limited to only the product they are trained with. Vocational Training opens their gates to world of engineering products. They start practicing and understanding more and more similar products.

But let us be clear and understand that only basic core skills don’t make one a skilled trade technician or engineer or supervisor. One should have skills-set. Skills set is combination of core skills + soft skills+ communication skills+ personality.

Education and Employability Training

One is considered to be Employable, if he fulfills following conditions:

01.Basic Knowledge level of the core education. This acts as body of an automobile,
02.Basic extra Certificate courses ,additional to the education like that of an automobile’s accessories.
03.Attitude, self initiative and Eagerness to perform and learn, similar to fuel of the automobile,
04.Training to the Individual with soft skills, and how to use the knowledge to perform tasks, this is similar to using different types of tyres, wheel covers, tyre inflation as per the road and load, tuning of brakes & lights, adjusting seats & mirrors and so on.

A vehicle/automobile owner seldomly puts a brand new & basic vehicle on road to ensure safety and Higher performance.

Similarly an Industry ensures all above traits in Just pass Graduate to ensure safety and performance.

It is seen and experienced that some of the Colleges and Academicians don’t like Training. They take Training as scar mark. They should take care of point 1 as above such that the fresh graduates are strong in academics. Colleges ‘s role is limited to 1 above, however if they can contribute on 2,3 and 4 above either directly or from out side their students will be employed in Core Sector accordingly.

In my opinion Training or addition of 2,3 &4 above from out side other than the college which secures them them Employment should be a matter of Joy to them today and tomorrow in long run.

Wishing all the best to Upcoming Aspiring Engineers.

Competitiveness and sustainability of Core Sector Industries

Among Core Sector Industries the issue of sustainability is very important. Quality, productivity, profits, Competitiveness of a or many products of any industry are closely related to each other. If one characteristic is dented, all others get adverse impact. These are the key factors which contribute directly to branding and sustainability of industries.

Higher the Quality standards, lesser the wastage of different nature, some of the inherent wastage due to Quality rejection are:

raw material, the wastage incurs huge loss directly on raw material cost and many other evils like pilferage; house keeping of working area;dislocation of raw material procurement planning;delays in delivery of products;engagement of extra manpower; excessive energy consumption;excessive tools consumption; extra wear and tear of Plant and Machinery grow automatically. Pilferage and engagement of extra manpower are nuisance issues which lead to slow death of Industry and the reasons won’t be visible easily.

This list speak about the factors which compound the fall of overall productivity and therefore profits and subsequently competitiveness, branding and sustainability of the industries.

Industries should consider and use management tools to implement Quality Assurance and Quality Control in their Industries irrespective of it’s size.
